Expressions

 

• Spin a yarn = To spin a yarn is to tell a story, usually one that is fictitious (not real or true, being imaginary or having been fabricated.)
• By word of mouth = Something is communicated by word of mouth if it is spoken and not written down.

 

ex1) At the family reunion last year, my mom and my uncle were spinning yarns about the small town where they grew up.

ex2) I heard about the new restaurant through word of mouth.

Questions

 

1. Can you give an example of a memorable story that someone has told you? Are there any stories that are told and retold within your family or your group of friends?

by word of mouth란 표현은 "Where did you hear it?"이란 질문에 어울리는 답변이기도 해요.

 

What makes stories...에 대해 이야기도 나누었는데요.

Good Character, emotion, up and down, conflits 등이 나왔어요.

 

그리고 게임처럼 'Group stories'를 만들어 보기도 했어요.

처음엔 한 명씩 한 단어를 돌아가면서 말하다가 나중엔 한 문장씩 말해서 이야기를 만드는 건데요.

한 단어씩 말했을 때는 이야기가 산으로 가고 하나도 맞지 않고 그랬어요.

한 문장씩 했을 때도 아주 멋진 이야기는 아니지만 상상력이 가미된 재미있는 이야기를 만들 수 있었어요.

여러 명이 있을 때 게임처럼 해보는 것도 재밌을 듯 해요 :)

 

교훈을 주는 이야기로 Fables, Parables라는 단어도 새로 알게 됐어요. (우화)

existential도 언급했는데 어떤 관계였는지는 깜박했어요.

The Aesop for Children

 

The Lion & the Mouse

 

A Lion lay asleep in the forest, his great head resting on his paws. A timid little Mouse came upon him unexpectedly, and in her fright and haste to get away, ran across the Lion's nose. Roused from his nap, the Lion laid his huge paw angrily on the tiny creature to kill her.

"Spare me!" begged the poor Mouse.

"Please let me go and some day I will surely repay you."

The Lion was much amused to think that a Mouse could ever help him. But he was generous and finally let the Mouse go.

 

Some days later, while stalking his prey in the forest, the Lion was caught in the toils of a hunter's net. Unable to free himself, he filled the forest with his angry roaring. The Mouse knew the voice and quickly found the Lion struggling in the net. Running to one of the great ropes that bound him, she gnawed it until it parted, and soon the Lion was free.

 

"You laughed when I said I would repay you," said the Mouse. "Now you see that even a Mouse can help a Lion."
