Idioms

 

  • staycation = a vacation in which you explore your home town or region, or just relax at home, rather than traveling
  • off the beaten path/track = less famous attractions or destinations
  • in the same boat = we are all in the together; in the same situation
  • backseat driver = A passenger in a car who gives unwanted advice to the driver.
  • take the high road = do something ethical or noble

 

ex1) My neighbors decided they couldn't afford a vacation this summer; but they put together a nice staycation by visiting the zoo, children's museum, and other local attractions.

ex2) I wanted to visit the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, but my brother wanted to visit places that were off the beaten path.

ex3) I am so stressed for my exams, but I know my classmates are in the same boat.

ex4) I can't stand backseat drivers like my father-in-law! He's always telling me to speed up or slow down.

ex5) Stan was rude but Jorge decided to take the high road and not say anything rude back.

'in the same boat'은 주로 nagative한 상황에 쓰임.

 

'backseat driver' 와 관련해서 나온 표현 중에는 

Too many chefs in the kitchen과

Too many chiefs, not enough Indians가 있는데 이 표현은 논란의 여지가 있으므로 쓰지 않는 것이 좋다. 

 

'take the high road'
